Yoga for Better Sleep

Yoga for Better Sleep

with Lorraine Tecza

Are you running on empty? Are you stressed to the point of exhaustion? Are you letting constant fatigue prevent you from enjoying life? When was the last time you got eight hours of restful sleep? Can you even remember?

There are three things vital to the human body: water, food and sleep. For a moment I’d like to focus on sleep, and the reasons you are finding it difficult to get to sleep and stay asleep. Sleep problems are often caused by anxiety and stress. And, the more you worry and toss and turn, the worse the problem gets! Cortisol is the “stress” hormone, and when there is too much produced by your adrenal glands, it causes a host of health problems, including poor sleep.

Think of cortisol as nature’s built-in alarm system. It’s your body’s main stress hormone. It works with certain parts of your brain to control mood, motivation and fear. Problems occur, however, when too much stress results in too much cortisol in the blood stream, derailing your body’s most important functions which can result in:
- Anxiety and depression
- Headaches
- Memory and concentration problems
- Digestive problems
- Trouble sleeping
- Weight gain

One answer to alleviating stress is the practice of Yoga. Dr. Dean Ornish, a renowned cardiologist, has demonstrated that yoga can reverse heart disease combined with the proper diet, exercise, and love and support (he calls it stress management but I was taught “Yoga for Cancer and Cardiac patients” by the person who designed the yoga program for him, Ms. Nischala Devi). His program is called “Ornish Lifestyle Medicine”.

In the attached video, I will demonstrate and lead you through 4 restorative yoga poses that you can do in your pj’s, from the comfort of your own bed, for better and more restful sleep!

I also invite you to join me at Dancing Spirit Ranch this June to rest, recharge, and soothe your soul. As a yoga instructor for over 30 years, I am combining the teachings of yoga with wellness coaching to provide a truly unique, restorative retreat. Each day I will teach a Hatha yoga class in the morning prior to breakfast, then after a day of activities I will teach a Yin/Restorative class. I will also include at least one Yoga Nidra session. What is Yoga Nidra you ask? It is sleep with trace awareness. It also happens to be one of the most enjoyable yoga practices! By the end of the one hour session you will be rested and rejuvenated, allowing your body to heal.
