“I attended my first ever yoga retreat with Melissa this year and would recommend Gypset Yoga Retreats to anyone interested in a retreat that makes one feel welcome, strong and nourished. Melissa put together a retreat that allowed everyone to participate in what worked best for them, with healthy, delicious food options, in a community setting in which I made new, lifelong, friends. MEET YOUR HOSTS

Melissa Joy Schoeller

Melissa Joy Schoeller founded Gypset Yoga after five years of guest teaching yoga classes at a dozen tropical resorts around the world.

As a guest teacher, she quickly saw that travel gave people the opportunity open themselves. Yoga and wellness elevated a vacation into a transformative experience, and to appreciate the beauty within all things from a centered and grounded perspective. After organizing several retreats on her own for seven years, the word of mouth from students inspired her to start Gypset Yoga with Laurel Van Matre.

A consummate entrepreneur, Melissa started her first business at the age of 7, making and selling rock people (yes, people made of rocks). She has founded multiple successful businesses, including a spin/yoga studio and a boutique gift store. Both are still going strong.

Melissa has taught yoga in a variety of non-traditional settings, including music festivals, brewpubs and corporate on-site. Beyond her passion for yoga and travel, she is a former mountain bike racer and renowned for her playlists.

Style: vinyasa flow, yin, nidra, meditation, barre, spinning & private training.

Inspiration: music, nature, travel, ritual, pause, connection & authenticity.

Laurel Van Matre

A yoga teacher, world traveler and business owner,  Laurel Van Matre brings her authenticity, sense of humor and the wisdom gleaned from her lifelong wellness journey to GYPSET Yoga Retreats.

Laurel spent years traveling through Europe and Asia before starting her own garden design business. Soon, she began practicing yoga as a student. Then she began teaching classes, and has since become teacher of teachers in her Northeast Minneapolis yoga studio, YOGA Garden.

Her experience has given her the ability to meet the student where they are in their practice, helping them find a way to access poses that elude them, whether they are beginners or advanced. While many people think of yoga is as meditative, making it fun is equally important to her.

As her yoga practice evolved, Laurel began sharing her experience with corporate clients as a motivational speaker and strategic consultant. Using themes from yoga, she helps people improve themselves both personally and professionally. She recently sold her garden design business to focus on her passion for yoga and innovation.

Laurel is a gardner, a cyclist and a enjoys good wine and good food. When she’s not traveling the world teaching GYPSET Yoga Retreats she teaches out of her studio in NE Minneapolis, YOGA Garden.

Style: alignment-based vinyasa flow, nidra, restorative and individual coaching

Inspiration: gardening, sunshine, the ocean, traveling the world and listening to people’s stories, meeting new people, her family and an appreciation for moving through the world as an individual and how we all do that while at the same time together as a group.
